What are microgreens?
Microgreens are the seedlings of edible vegetables, herbs, or even flowers. Seeds of the plants are grown under lights in soil or a soil-like medium until the first leaves appear, have developed, and turned green. This may take 7-21 days depending on the plant.
What are shoots?
Shoots are very similar to microgreens except that they tend to be bigger than microgreens. In some cases, such as pea shoots, the plant is grown taller and has more sets of leaves before harvesting.
Are microgreens the same as sprouts?
Microgreens are not the same as sprouts. Sprouts are grown in water and are harvested before they are fully developed, often within two or three days. The seed is consumed with the sprouts. Microgreens are grown in a medium until at least the first leaves have developed and turned green. Microgreens are then cut at the base discarding the seed and any roots that have developed.
Why should you eat microgreens?
Microgreens taste great! Microgreens taste like the adult versions of the vegetable or herb. They are a great way to add flavor to salads, sandwiches, and even soups.
Microgreens are packed with nutrition and are a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Some studies have shown that microgreens may contain as much as 40 times the nutrition of the fully-fledged plant.
Microgreens make a great snack! Looking for something crunchy and healthy and delicious? Snack on some microgreens! Many customers (even kids) can’t resist and devour them straight from the bag.
